USA Embassy, Westgate, Harare. Zimbabwe - April 2017

The Contractor, Bitumen World, Harare, was asked to present the best option for upgrading the three roads around the embassy - under construction in 2017, completed beginning 2019.

After exhaustive laboratory tests, SoilSta was identified as the preferred stabiliser - as an alternative to cement stabilisation which was seen as prohibitively costly -  for the unique make-up of the existing sub-base, made up of a mix of materials from "iron stone' (ranging from G2 - G6), various sandy soils including collapsible sand patches and other soils found in-situ - some with high clay content, PI>10

Bitumen World stabilised to a depth of 250mm using a Bomag Recycler

The project featured 2 side roads and the front road, Lorraine Drive - a very busy road including heavy vehicles - which is the main artery from Westgate Shopping Centre into Harare CBD.

Videos (click on an arrow in the image boxes) and images of the construction process, the stabilised roads opened to traffic are shown below. The sealed road photo was taken 4 years after completion, all three roads intact with no maintenance required at all.
